West Vail Pass Recreation Path

Client:Colorado Department of Transportation

This project is located on the West Vail Pass Recreation Path adjacent to Interstate 70 in Eagle County. It begins north of Interstate 70 (MP 181.9) and extends approximately 8.2 miles to the top of Vail Pass and 1-2 miles into Summit County (MP 190.1). This eight mile section of path is located at elevations ranging from 8,000′-11,000’ and experiences extreme weather conditions that can cause damage to the asphalt at a higher than average rate. The resurfacing portion of the project included approximately 8 miles of a 1-1/2” overlay of the existing path using warm mix asphalt. The work also included resurfacing on Big Horn Road inside the Town of Vail, drainage improvements, striping, signage and traffic control. Columbine Hills Concrete, Inc. was given 25 days to complete the job and the path had to be open to the public Friday-Sunday.
